A plan to rent or buy a Bangkok apartment is a sensible and practical idea if a person wants to move to Bangkok. Bangkok, being the capital of Thailand, is one of the centres of all activity in Thailand itself. Apart from being a famous tourist location, it also provides Western-style apartments to welcome foreigners and make them feel at home in their Bangkok condo or apartment. However, the usual question that arises to a person’s mind when he/she wants to move to Bangkok is how they should go about finding a place – preferably cheap – in Bangkok.

In a city with eye-catching beauty, purchasing or renting a cheap Bangkok apartment is possible, depending on the person’s budget. If the person chooses to buy an apartment straightaway, there are two key areas left to his decision: Sukhumvit and Victory Monument. Sukhumvit is slightly more on the expensive side, but it is a good investment because residents of this area can sometimes get provisions at a discount. Victory Monument is relatively cheaper and is more on the quieter side of town. Buying a Bangkok apartment is not difficult on its own, but it is the price that is set for it.

However, in the case of renting/leasing an apartment, the expense is definitely lesser, but some areas in Bangkok can charge high interest rates. Renting a Bangkok condo is easy but one has to choose the locality sensibly. Finding the right place can be done by doing an Internet search or getting recommendations from people who have visited or are staying in Bangkok. Renting a Bangkok apartment is also slightly tricky because one has to keep track of other expenses he might incur during his stay, such as electricity and other bills. Before renting or buying an apartment in Bangkok, one must find out how much that building charges for electricity per unit, for they are known to vary. All these factors, once looked into, can help you find the perfect apartment for yourself and you can decide to purchase or rent it.

Several organizations offer package deals and offers at surprisingly cheap purchase or rent amounts that one can consider looking into before moving to Bangkok. Several companies offer seasonal and festive discounts and travellers can take advantage of these changes in rates. However, the ultimate decision of buying a place or renting/leasing a Bangkok apartment is left to the traveller because it depends on his/her income or budget. Offers are available, but every choice has its own pros and cons. But in a beautiful city like Bangkok, the cons are almost negligible.

The Southeast Asian city of Bangkok is said to have a tropical climate. The Thais divide the year into three seasons which they call a cool season, hot season, and rainy season. Temperatures in the city rarely drop below 25° C (70° F). The months of October until February are considered to be favorable for tourists.

The cool season runs from December to March, although there’s usually just one week in December when temperatures are actually comfortable. Temperatures dip down to a few centigrade in these months and normal life is affected only a slightly.

The heat begins to increase soon after the New Year and by April or May, it can be almost unbearably hot and humid. One of Thailand’s most celebrated festivals – Songkran, takes place in April and involves lots of water throwing to cool down. Temperatures are at the peak during the months of April and May, and it is very hot and sticky due to the increased sea winds. Later months of the year face a gradual fall in temperature.

The rainy season, which coincides with the European and North American summers, is characterized by heavy downpours and not so favorable for tourists. During the rainy season, there are extremely heavy downpours, but they generally only last for an hour or so in the afternoon. The city annually records a maximum of 340 mm a year. Months of May and June to October experience very heavy rains. The rain cools down the high temperatures and cleans the air nicely that may be unique real relaxing relaxing after heating. With the temperatures touching the peak, the rain is not cold. Most of the times, it can be just like a warm shower.

June to September experiences plenty of sunshine and is much cooler with the temperatures ranging around 24-28° C, but is the season for rain and is really refreshing. This has a lot of advantages like less visitors and better hotel rates. Best time to visit is from October until February when temperature ranges around 25- 28° C with light breezes and only the occasional showers.

Bangkok’s culture dates back to many centuries that it is said that archeological excavations in the area north of Nakorn Ratchasima indicate that there were people living here over 4000 years ago.

The Bangkokians are a bunch of warm and friendly people, usually too polite to show offense. Yet, as with any nation, there are borders of behavior that should and should not be crossed. They take great pride in their monarchy. Visitors are well-advised to respect the reverence in which devoted Bangkokians hold their royal family. The Buddhist religion is considered sacred by Bangkokians. Monks, temples, and Buddha images are everywhere and most of the people treat them with great respect. It is expected that appropriate clothing be worn in temples, and shoes removed when entering certain areas in the temples.

For Bangkokians, the maintenance of surface calm and harmony is crucial. Loss of temper, arguing, or direct criticism are best avoided among them, because they feel it serves little purpose in any case. The famous wai is a used as a gesture for both greeting and respect. Wai requires the person to use both of his hands as if praying in front of his face. In general, it is considered to be a mark of respect to try to keep the head at a lower level than that of a senior or older person when talking to or passing them. On entering a private chamber or house, it is customary to remove your shoes. The polite form of address when talking to or about people of similar or older age are to use the title “Khun” and the person’s first name.

Many Bangkokians will be too polite to comment on behaviour that is disrespectful of a fellow Bangkokian, but you should be aware that it is still offensive. Looks and appearances are important to Bangkokians. When meeting them, dressing smartly, or at least appropriately, reflects the degree of respect you hold for them.

Bangkok is a mecca for shopping enthusiasts, and everything including electronic items, computer software and hardware, art and craft items, Chinese specialties, textiles, jewelry, and much more can be shopped here.

Perhaps most popular among the shopping highlights in Bangkok is the Siam Square, which is strategically positioned at Central Station on the BTS Sky Train route. This area is dotted with hundreds of high-end shopping malls, among which one of the most sought after is Siam Center and Siam Discovery Center, within which one can find a number of shops selling branded items.

There is also an elegant cinema complex on the top floor of Siam Discovery Center, with comfortable seats. This is a great place to relax after a day of tired shopping. Located just ten minutes walk from the Siam Square is another much famed shopping spot in Bangkok, namely, Mahboonkrong Shopping Center, dotted with a large number of shops selling quality clothing and electronic items at knock-down prices.

One can also find a couple of shopping malls and department stores, close to the Chit Lom BTS Sky Train station. Among which, perhaps the most significant is the eight-storied World Trade Center, attached with a number of duty free shops. Found on the top floor of the World Trade Center is an ice skating rink. The Central Group’s flagship store, Central Chit Lom Department Store, is also located here. Such shopping centers as Gaysorn Plaza, Maneya Centre, Sogo, and Narayana Phand, a great spot to shop handicraft items, are also situated in this area.

For those who want to shop computer-related items and peripherals at cheap prices, a great way would be to head to Pantip Plaza on the Phetburi Road. This is a paradise for shopping computer items. Every floor within the plaza has a number of shops selling both original and pirated software and hardware items. One could buy copy of VCD movies for a price as low as 100 baht.

A good number of small as well as large shopping malls can also be found along the Ploenchit Road and Sukhumvit Road, such as, Robinson, Ploenchit Plaza, Times Square, Emporium, and Landmark.

Popular shopping areas in Bangkok also include Silom Road, located to the south of the Siam Square. Just few among the shopping malls in this area are Silom Center, Central department stores, Silom Plaza, Thaniya Plaza, Silom Village, and Holiday Inn Crown Plaza.

Shopping at Bangkok would not be complete without taking a tour to Chatuchak market, which becomes alive in the city every weekend. Located near the Mo Chit BTS Sky Train station, Chatuchak market is an incredible outdoor market, from where everything from handicraft items and livestock items could be shopped and that too at bargain prices. Further, you can also find a large number of food stalls in the market, selling delicious Thai food items such as fried noodles, noodle curry, and barbequed satays.

Other popular shopping areas in the city are Bangrak Market, a bustling area which is famed for its flower stalls, engage in selling enormous variety of cut flowers, jasmines, and orchids; China Town, with alleys packed with outlets dealing in almost all types of goods; Pratunam Market, which is a great place to relish hygiene as well as delicious food items; Woeng Nakhon Kasem – a popular spot to shop items such as brassware, old fashioned furniture, industrial items, antiques, and Chinese porcelains.

Above all, for a unique shopping experience, take a tour to some of the most fabulous night markets in the area. Most prominent among the night markets in the city are the Suan Luam Night Bazaar, whose specialty is stalls that sell products brought from every corner of the country.

Thai cuisine has elements in common with both Indian and Chinese food, but offers advantages over both. The aromatic flavours are more prominent and varied than in Chinese food, and the majority of dishes are lighter and less fatty than Indian foods.

Rice, vegetables, fish and fresh herbs and spices are essential elements. Some common Thai ingredients, such as turmeric, which has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, are often included in lists of so-called “super foods”. When one also considers the relatively small amount of red meat used in Thai recipes, it is not surprising that it is regarded as one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.

But, health considerations aside, the best reason to try Thai food is its impressive range of flavours. To get the full benefit of the experience, it is a good idea to partake of a meal served in the traditional manner. The company of two or three people is so much nicer than dining alone, so a Thai meal should be a communal occasion. In general, the more people present, the more dishes will be ordered, and the more different things may be tried. As a rough guide, it might be expected that two people would order three dishes in addition to their rice. Three diners might order four, or maybe five, dishes.

When the food arrives, each dinner guest will receive an individual plate of rice, which forms the base upon which she may construct a meal according to taste from the dishes that have been ordered. Each will choose whatever she fancies from the shared dishes and add it to her plate of rice. While eating the meal, soup may be enjoyed as an accompaniment and does not have to be taken as a separate course. This sometimes surprises first-time diners.

Thai food is usually eaten with a fork and spoon; something which greatly reassures those who might have expected to have to master the unfamiliar technique of chopsticks. Chopsticks are actually used rarely, generally only for eating some noodle dishes. As all elements of a Thai meal are usually served in nice, bite-sized pieces, it is easy to eat one’s dinner with dignity.

In some part of Thailand, as in many parts of the world, it is common to eat food directly with the right hand instead of using cutlery. Practicality, and the sometimes rather rigid British sense of propriety make this an uncommon technique to use in restaurants, and it probably goes without saying that the spoon and fork option will be seen as preferable by all present!

Amongst the fare, one might find various snacks and side dishes such as rice cakes, satay (a kebab-like meat snack, skewered with bamboo and often served with a peanut sauce) and spring rolls. General dishes might include omelettes and stir fried or sweet and sour dishes. Soups, curries and various dips are all likely to make an appearance, as is a salad. The Thai salad is, however, often a little different from its conventional British counterpart in the use of sweet, sour and salty flavours along with the spiciness of chillies.

Like many Asian cuisines, Thai restaurant cookery has made the occasional adaptation to take advantage of ingredients local to the country in which it operates. Broccoli, for example, is used in many British Thai restaurants, but it is rarely used in Thailand itself.

It is beyond the scope of this article to describe in detail the flavours of individual Thai dishes. Suffice it to say that there is something to suit every palate. Thai cuisine specialises in balancing spicy, sweet, sour, salt and bitter flavours, and as fresh herbs generally take precedence over strong spices, those flavours are perhaps less daunting than those in some of the fierce curries to be found in Indian food. That is not to say that Thai curries lack fire, but the spice-heat is perhaps more fleeting than that from Indian foods, and thus the palate is more quickly free to enjoy the flavours of other dishes. The meal is usually rounded off with a welcome sweet or fruit desert to contrast with the spices and herbs of the main meal.

A Thai meal is a visual experience as well as an olfactory one. The presentation of many dishes is colourful and rich in varied textures. The attractiveness of the food, the richness of the flavours and the emphasis in communal enjoyment of the meal make Thai dining an experience that should not be missed.
